And before they came along it was West Germanic, with quite a bit of
Norse thrown in.  So we've Angles, Saxons, and then those Normans.  I
think this is one of the reasons the language has become the world's
lingua franca in terms of number of different countries that can speak
it as a second language;  it can adapt and absorb bits it comes into
contact with, unlike a Romance language that's stuck being just that.

Also, AIUI, there are phrases that have a word from both, typically in
law, so all parties could have understood.
