That was the date of the first formal publication about those macros.

Relying on what I can remember from a casual discussion with John Lions in 
1979, I thought the MM macros existed in parts of Bell Labs well prior to 
that publication date. Exactly when, i.e. earlier in 1976 or even 1975, 
was not part of that discussion.
