She knew what it was to risegrander and grander, till she filled the universe with herwomanhood. In the warm morning after the rain, the frogs were whirringfrantically. Kate could be imperious, almost cruel in her giving. The stream flows into himfrom the heart of the world: and from me. Ramón arrived home one evening in November, from a long journey toSonora.
He seemed to me almost done up, last night. Teresa saw the warm-yellow muslin upon herself, andher eyes flashed.
Kate wanted to make her indignation thorough, but she did not quitesucceed.
Everything was dark, save for theintermittent pallor of lightning. This is why Cipriano came to Kate with those black, flashing, boyish eyes. At home, he would feel his strength upon him. And him alone, just as a man and a soldier, she could marry easilyenough. He was, to himself, Huitzilopochtli, and to this hewould maintain a demonish faith.
This was the dragon of Mexico, that Ramón had to fight. Herself, she would have to expostulate, she would have to try to prevent him. The men, Ramón and Cipriano, caused the change, andMexico. And he does not forget that he has mysoul with him. Everything was dark, save for theintermittent pallor of lightning. He believed I should keep a soul of myown.
But Teresa looked at the room, not out of doors.
One wonders if it isnt betterto be just a man, said Kate. Thesinking of both beings, into a new being.
The Archbishop had declared against it, Ramón andCipriano and their adherents were excommunicated. They would give her deference, and a sort of grudging reverence forthis.
And tocarry his precious seed in her womb!
There wasa smell of water in the land, and a sense of soothing. But for you Ramón would have been killed. She belonged to the ruling races, the clever ones.
Onlyliving to send her soul with him, inside his precious body. Something older, and moreeverlastingly potent, than our would-be fair-and-square world.
