Hi Greg,

Thanks for reviewing the diff.

I agree the title of the diff is not quite accurate. Sorry about that.

I'm not sure the point of having an indirect reference, so this is why I
have not updated the `gdb' variable.

Let me know if it's needed. I can revise my commit then.
