Ok, discussed this on IRC. The basic difference is whether there should be padding at the right side of a cell (i.e., whether text that goes outside the padding boundary should be clipped or not). I kind of like it; Tuomas doesn't. OTOH, PUIs don't do it and I never took issue with it there, so it may not be so important to me, either. -- What I really like is what the KDE panel does: gradually fading the text out; Tuomas says that we can do this, too (want! :-) ).
In any case, the consensus was that this should be configurable. - Benja
