There is a very old translation of this Epistle in the British Museum,among the
Harleian MSS.
2 But Paul looking only at thegoodness of God, did them noharm,
but loved them greatly.
4 Trifina; without any surprise,accompanied Thecla, and
theshe-lion licked the feet of Thecla. 3 I desire therefore you wouldnot charge
me with negligence, ifI wait for a proper person.

worldly enjoyments; for theyshall be accepted of God.
4 But the governor was
moredeliberate, and calling to Paul,he said, Who art thou?

Trifina was one ofthe royal family; and she thusexpressed her sorrow, and
said;Alas! 6 They replied, Is there anyone within, whose name is Thecla?
WE are
very much concernedat your too long absencefrom us.
Trifina hearing this,
groaned again,and said: O unrighteous judgments!
They seem to laygross crimes
to thy charge.
14 Thecla replied, Grant meonly the seal of Christ, and
notemptation shall affect me.
Paul replied, The grace ofGod be with thee and
thy family. Thewomen and the people seeing this,cried out and said, Do not
throwyourself into the water. 2 As soon therefore as you beginto come, we shall
