There is a very old translation of this Epistle in the British Museum, among the Harleian MSS. 2 But Paul looking only at thegoodness of God, did them noharm, but loved them greatly. 4 Trifina; without any surprise, accompanied Thecla, and theshe-lion licked the feet of Thecla. 3 I desire therefore you wouldnot charge me with negligence, ifI wait for a proper person. 1 Paul accused before the governor by Thamyris. Dated the fifth of thecalends of July, in the fourthConsulship of Nero, and Messala. 4 Believe that you ought toavoid the superstitions of Jewsand Gentiles. 14 Thecla replied, Grant meonly the seal of Christ, and notemptation shall affect me. 15 Blessed are they who abandontheir worldly enjoyments; for theyshall be accepted of God. 4 But the governor was moredeliberate, and calling to Paul,he said, Who art thou? 4 Trifina; without any surprise, accompanied Thecla, and theshe-lion licked the feet of Thecla. Trifina was one ofthe royal family; and she thusexpressed her sorrow, and said;Alas! 6 They replied, Is there anyone within, whose name is Thecla? WE are very much concernedat your too long absencefrom us. Trifina hearing this, groaned again, and said: O unrighteous judgments! They seem to laygross crimes to thy charge. 14 Thecla replied, Grant meonly the seal of Christ, and notemptation shall affect me. Paul replied, The grace ofGod be with thee and thy family. Thewomen and the people seeing this, cried out and said, Do not throwyourself into the water. 2 As soon therefore as you beginto come, we shall presently seeeach other.
