With regard to the dataset versus attribute question, I strongly
suggest to thoroughly read the parts of the HDF5 documentation [1]
on this topic. In particular, it is essential that you study the
Advanced Topics in HDF5 [2], especially Chunking and Metadata.

Attributes are an efficient means to store small data as part of an
HDF5 object. Thus it is a very good idea to use attributes for any
kind of simulation parameters, whether scalar or multi-dimensional.
