Calculating the total amount of med is a bit involved, because there
are several variables, some of them easy, some of the more complex.

The very first one to deal with is the Unit of Measure (UoM) of
the product itself. If we deal with the smallest unit (say "capsule"),
then we can proceed. Now, if the UoM is of the product is box
(containing many capsules), then we would need to know the number of
capsules in the box. 

Then, there are other variables, such as "Pro re nata" (PRN), which
would make it even harder.

That said, you have brought a great point any ideas on optimizing the
prescription process are most welcome
