I have a horrible suspicion that he's obfuscating his goal in order to
get literal answers instead of actual help.  Remember, this is the guy
who said not to answer him at all if you did not intend to give him a
literal answer.

With that in mind, he is probably doing something like "implementing a
stack in POSIX sh".  In which case the joke's on him, because all of
our answers so far have used bash syntax, except for my first answer to
him (rewrite, do it forward) and your FAQ pointer for option handling.
