My bad, I got confused.  I also posted to gnuplot mailing list to see if they 
could help.  The problem lies in their intersection and I did not think the 
gnuplot list would have the expertise you have demonstrated in addressing the 
session management aspect.  Obviously fixing gnuplot is outside the scope of 
the bash list.  :-)
