I cannot recreate that result.

  $ echo $COLUMNS
  80
  $ printenv COLUMNS
  ...nothing...

  $ echo $BASH_VERSION
  4.2.37(1)-release

  $ echo $BASH_VERSION
  4.1.5(1)-release
