I didn't mean for you to go cave-diving into the zsh implementation. I
hoped there was more detail in the zsh documentation.

If I had to guess, knowing that zsh's editor is tightly integrated with the
shell, I would say that zsh's idea of the `default' is, in readline and
bash terms, after the shell-specific bindings are installed.
