Allens suggestion worked and Mark's idea of using the "and" operator
worked this way:
cfrun '-D class1.!class2'
All of this begs another question;
What is the order of precedence among defined classes?
i.e. - if I -v cfengine and see the following;
Defined Classes = ( any class1 !class2 class2 )
Is class2 true or not?
[Besides being defined on the command line, my classes are defined in a
cf.groups file which is imported in cfengine.conf ]
Thanks for your help.
