This might not be applicable, but I've seen a similar problem with
gethostbyname functionality on different machines and a different piece of
software.  We found that if you rearranged the /etc/hosts file so that the
actual hostname record was at the top of the file it fixed the problem.  I
don't know if this would work on the SGI machines or not, but it might be
worth a try.

Seems kind of silly, but it might work.
