I also experienced this.

{ /etc/newsyslog.conf

ResetSearch "1"
SetLine "/var/log/somelog.log  640  20  1000 * Z"
AppendIfNoLineMatching "/var/log/somelog\.log.*"

}

Had to use AppendIfNoSuchLine, LocateLineMatching, ReplaceLineWith combo
instead.
