I agree with everything you had to say. Before I reply, let's remember one more thing: replicating (or backing up) a bootable MacOS disk requires "blessing" the System Folder. In order to make a copy of a boot disk work, this would need to be done.

Now, I would suggest the following syntax:

copy:

   /file [...] format=double

Explanation:

If cfengine runs on a MacOS box, then it would automatically handle resource forks; if not, then it doesn't. If it copies down a file, it does NOT expect to find a resource fork. If "format" is specified, then the file is "unwrapped" on download.

If "format" is specified on a non-MacOS box, the file format is ignored (but warned about).

"format" syntax could include: "double" (AppleDouble), "single" (AppleSingle), "binhex", and whatever else.

As for blessing System Folders, why not a "bless=yes" option for Directories?
