That's a rather negative all encompassing pessimism for this
late in the evening. There are times when copying is a more
rational approach and there are times when editing is a more
rational approach.
I have used a search/replace with abort conditional
for doing this, and at times I have copied a edited
file. The thing about convergence is that it is tricky,
and that is why sysadmin is hard. ;)
