I'm a bit confused by this. What "support"? It's a syslogd replacement-- using it is no different than using any other syslog daemon implementation. The difference is in what it does after it receives information via syslog(3). Using syslogd or msyslogd or mod-syslogd or syslog-ng should have no bearing whatsoever on the application generating the messages (cfengine).

Is this a commercial product? That would make it rather
inapplicable. But if it were easy to support as an alternative, I'd be willing.

As a side note:
Consider moving over to syslog-ng.
Syslogd is crippled trash compared to the power and flexibility of
syslog-ng.
WE use it, and it automatically creates our <hostname>.log files within
automatically created <month-year> directories.
automatic creation of log files is an option, and only one of hundreds of
advantages of syslog-ng. TCP logging/encryption is possible too.
It rocks! http://www.balabit.com/products/syslog_ng/
I'm not advertising for anyone - I just love it.

As you are doing specific debugging, I think it would be valuable to be able to turn on and off different levels of logging at different spots. Certainly choosing where to syslog to is a good thing. But this should be adjustable at different points.

As we deploy our web cluster, we are finding that syslog is a key bottleneck in system performance.
It may be worth looking at how syslog effects performance.

If you have 5000 machines all running cfengine, all syslogging to the same server at the same time,
I bet things get slow
