I think the point here is really that one's aesthetics are not always
up to the job of picking the most robust solution. In my experience,
one has to learn to love "convergence". Then everything becomes less
traumatic.

On a more constructive note - you might want to improve the elegance
of the solution using "methods". See for example the package
installation method in

http://www.cfengine.org/confdir/methods.html

would be a good approach for you. I would recommend adding locally significant
files on the end host, rather than on the central server. It's more
"object oriented" or "scoped".
