Can you name the variants that you have used?

And can you outline what the "rules" in an abstract sense
are for those variants (IE, OS independent descriptions of what is needed)

Like:
        mysql => port 3306 is open 
        mysql => mysql-server package is installed
        mysql => database owners/names/permissions derived from ldap
