ah actually after googling a bit more, I discovered that this had been
filed as a bug and supposedly fixed.
google some more and I discover some examples...
one has to use no quotes at all and insert a
$(spc)
where one wants the space.
This could do with going into the documentation
(yes, I know the special variable $(spc) is documented but not its use
nor an example).
