tidy does not like ExecResult variables

I'm running cfengine 2.1.10.  Why does the below not work?

control:
  actionsequence = ( tidy )

  dir = ( ExecResult(/bin/echo /tmp) )

tidy:
    $(dir)
    pattern=*
    age=7
    r=inf
    rmdirs=false
