Ok, did that.  Now I'm getting a slightly different error:

I had to install GNU m4 (its available as a package on
sunfreeware.com)
and then set the environment variable M4 to its path
(/usr/local/bin/m4
in my case). Don't forget to clear out the old files before re-running
configure. A 'make distclean' will get them all, but might be
overkill.
