[h-e-w] Emacs 21: letters with accents remain blank

Hello all,

I recently installed emacs 21.1.1.
There were some minor problems regarding fonts to resolve, but in a
whole all has been rather painless.

For typesetting I use gnuemacs-AucTeX-MikTeX. So far I could insert
letters with accents directly. Emacs translated them to portable code
automatically via the iso-syntax.el and iso-cvt.el.

Unfortunately this does not work anymore. Characters with accents
remain blank.

Any glue?
