You can try my dired-single package, found at:
http://www.northbound-train.com/emacs.html
In addition to always using a single buffer, you can specify a name
for the single buffer (e.g. "*dired*") so that the name of the buffer
stays the same all of the time (handy if you want to bind a key to
bring up the "current" dired buffer).
