FWIW: I've been doing what you're attempting on Win2K and VC 5.0 with
emacs 20.7 for years without problems.
I use autorevert on emacs and the equivalent on VC++, so I can do
small edits inside the IDE and major programming in emacs, and they
stay in sync.
