After glpsol issued the “generating CC..” line, I received the command prompt.  So it wasn’t working.

Are you sure it failed?  Could it have been still working?  On that point...

From experience with larger models, if you can generate a cplex lp file instead of a MathProg model/data file, you will save memory AND time.  Translating a MathProg/AMPL model can take longer than your solve time sometimes.
