starting to learn vi (yuck!) to use the OS.

Once upon a time I too tried with great difficulty
to configure and compile emacs on UnixWare.  That
was probably 4 or so years ago, but it doesn't surprise
me that it's still a problem.

I can't give any direct advice on configuring or
compiling.  However, I recommend you look at the SCO
SkunkWorks site for lots of good stuff like emacs,
all prebuilt:

    http://www.sco.com/skunkware/

It's not as much fun, but I hope it helps.  If it does,
then please let the mailing list know.
