To run a shell command and direct the output to the current
buffer, use M-! with a prefix argument: C-u M-! pwd RET.
In the case of "pwd", Emacs already knows the name of the
directory; one way to get it to the current buffer would be
C-x C-f C-a C-k C-g C-y.
