rectangle fill/newline

I want to perform the following conversion....

foo                >>>>emacs>>  $foo
data 33 53 64 234  >>>>>>>>>>>  data 33 53 64 234
foo                >>>>>>>>>>>  $foo
data 12345 53465 3 >>>>emacs>>  data 12345 53465 3
foo                >>>>>>>>>>>  $foo
data 1 353 3 6 6 3 >>> emacs >  data 1 353 3 6 6 3
foo                >>>>>>>>>>>  $foo

.... WITHOUT doing M-x replace-string.  I think a rectangle could do it,
but I don't know how to get emacs to recognize a newline.
