.emacs not executed

Hallo,
I've emacs 20.4 compiled under HP-UX 10.20. Then I copied the installation
from the original machine to a new HP-UX 11.00 workstation. Everything works
fine but the .emacs file in my $HOME isn't executedduring startup.
When I load the .emacs file and then type M-x eval-buffer everything wents
normal. Any suggestions?
