Put in in your $HOME directory.  Type 'echo $HOME' from the prompt; that will tell you which directory is your home.  Or, type 'cd ~'.  That will take you to your home directory.

Subject: .emacs file

Hi,

I just downloaded emacs 21.1 on to my Sun Solaris machine. It is now sitting in my home/emacs-21.1 directory. Now I need to add some code to the .emacs file in order to get emacs working in maxima mode. My question is where should i put the .emacs file so emacs will see it.

Thanks,
Lucy
