Assuming that you are in latex-mode or auctex-mode, you can enable syntax
highlighting by enabling global-font-lock mode. Put this in your ~/.emacs
file:
(global-font-lock-mode t)
Force latex-mode or auctex-mode with
M-x latex-mode RET
M-x auctex-mode RET
