Antialiased fonts with GNU Emacs 21.2.1

Hello,

I am trying to get Antialiased fonts with Gnu Emacs and I don't have so much success...
I have chosen a new set of fonts for emacs by setting a .Xresources file:
emacs.font:-adobe-courier-medium-r-normal--19-*-*-*-m-120-iso8859-9
(I have a 21 inches screen and bad eyes... ;) ) unfortunately, if I compare how this font is displayed by emacs with how it is displayed by the gnome-terminal I see large differences. It looks much nicer with the gnome-terminal. I suppose this has something to do with antialiasing. The most surprising is that at start up (the emacs welcoming message), the fonts look good (are they anti-aliased then?) but after that, they look pretty ugly.

Is it possible to correct that?
I am using a RedHat 7.3 box with Gnu Emacs 21.2.1 (i386-redhat-linux-gnu, X toolkit, Xaw3d scroll bars)

Thanks in advance for any answer.
