kill-ring-save trouble

From: Lars Gustafsson
Subject: kill-ring-save trouble
Date: 23 Dec 2002 12:40:12 -0800

Is there a way to stop Emacs from saving everything, which is being
highlighted into the kill-ring. In many windows applications you can
copy some text and then replace other text by first highlighting it
and then paste over it. This works one time in Emacs but the second
time you're trying to paste in the text, which you first copied, the
text pasted in is the text which was highlighted the second time. I
wanted the text highlighted the first time to be pasted in.
In summary:
First highlight, copy
Second highlight, paste
Third highlight, paste ERROR!

Is there something I can put in my .emacs file to avoid this problem?

Thankful for answers, Lars

How do I make the delete key work? (require 'delbs) is supposed to
work for XEmacs. But it doesn't work for Emacs. I want it to delete
the character just right of where the cursor is.

I have a Logitech mouse with a wheel. I have configured it to function
as the backward key on my Internet browser. Always when I use the
Emacs manual or when I open a directory and want to choose a file to
open I have to use the return key to make my choice. How do I make
mouse button No. 2 work so I don't have to use the return key all the
time.

| Hi,
|
| I'm trying to figure out how to customize out some of the graphical
| features of Emacs 21, e.g. get rid of the toolbar. My rationale is
| that I use Emacs frequently via a DSL connection that's sufficiently
| slow that Emacs 21 responds considerably more sluggishly than Emacs
| 20. OTOH I like some of the other new version 21 features so I don't
| want to downgrade. I haven't been able to figure out where to find
| the relevant variables--suggestions anyone?

Another poster answered your question, but perhaps you would like
emacs with the -nw option? No X, but colors really do help a lot. An
it's *much* faster than even the most slimmed-down X version.

Come to think of it, I've been wondering *why* this is so. Over a
slow but still reasonable connection, things that should not affect
screen updating at all also take 4 -- 10 times as long under X as
with -nw. For example, I timed the loading of my .emacs, and what
usually takes 4-5 seconds takes 30 seconds under X when running over
the slow line. Hardly any screen updating takes place during this
process.

Can anyone explain this? Is it only me??

Wouldn't it be a matter of writing a function for each that does a
series of define-key (or global-set-key) statements and then putting
the appropriate function into a hook (like after-init-hook)?

Do

C-x C-f ~/.emacs

Hm. I think that you answered that it is *possible*.

I was looking for a bigger picture, that there may be several
suboptimally underengineered libraries with hard-coded keybindings, that
would clash or suffer, as a result.

Example: The Microsoft extensions to CUA tend to use C-s to save.
This is bound to search, which should be remapped to C-f
C-f is bound to forward, but [right] (arrow) is good enough.

I now go ahead, and make all these remappings. So far, so good.
What about third party libraries that add fancy extra functionality to
Search?
Further example: tiny-tools has tiny-search. Will this, and others be
losing, if C-s no longer does search?

Frankly, Emacs is no longer ugly. It is no longer difficult. Its
slowness has mostly been cured by fast hardware.
I believe that the only resistance to beginners are its obscure keybindings.
The other issue is that most beginners won't bother to learn elisp; that
is not a problem, until they desire to add new libraries.
The Emacs community seems to have little interest in building an
Eclipse-style plugin architecture any time soon.

At least, we can make the keybindings easy to use, for now.
