how to use control + arrow keys in terminal

i am using emacs in character terminal mode (no X); my keyboad has F1, 
F2, ... F12, arrows, keypad.

TERM is linux.

i would like to use control-right (control + right arrow) for forward-word.
but, emacs generate the same character sequence for both control-right 
and right. how to use control-right and other such cominations?  

similarly, control-f1 (control with any function key) has no effect, no 
character sequence is generated.
