What do these commands display?

        C-h v term-file-prefix
        M-x getenv RET term RET

Assuming the values are "term/" and "gnome" respectively,

first value was indeed "term/", second one [no match]

Sorry, that should be (all caps)

        M-x getenv RET TERM RET

Emacs was configured and installed with the default prefix
(/usr/local), there should be a file called
/usr/local/share/emacs/21.3/lisp/term/gnome.el

I installed emacs 21.3 to be sure, but there was
no gnome.el file in the directory mentioned.

I googled on gnome.el, but no sensible results appeared

[solution in case gnome.el was found]

No, I was suggesting code to put in your ~/.emacs file as a workaround.

Should I have added an option while './configure'-ing
in order to get that gnome.el ?

Is it part of a package that I should install additionally?

Not that I'm aware of.
