sgml validator problem

I've tried customizing the sgml-validate-command option without success.
M-x customize -> Programming -> SGML
Also, I've tried modifying my .emacs file directly with setq commands
etc. but there's always the default nsgmls stuff called upon doing a C-c
C-v.
My .emacs file is read successfully as I've tested with e.g. (display-time).
Please help
