automatically choosing encoding by filetype?

hi,

I would like to confgure my emacs to automatically choose the correct 
encoding when opening an saving files.
Espacially I would like all xml files (xsd,xsl,xslt,dtd,...) to be in 
utf-8 while all the rest should be in iso-8859-1 (latin-1) whih it 
currently defaults to.
I couldn't find any docs on mule. I'm running emacs 21.3

Any sugestions? Thanks in advance!
