php debugging with dbg?

has anyone found a good way of debugging php code using emacs as the 
debug interface?

ive read that the "dbg" debugger has a similar interface to gdb and 
should work in emacs w/ gud.

(even a non-emacs solution would be ok if it would reduce the number of 
echos and browser refreshes.)
