I think the file should be named Emacs, not Emacs.ad. And the directory needs to be mentioned in XUSERFILESEARCHPATH or XFILESEARCHPATH or some environment variable like this. Perhaps it works to put it in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults? You can use "appres Emacs" to check if you have used the right filename/directory. Perhaps "strace -eopen appres Emacs" is illucidating regarding the search path. Kai
