send-invisible and remote login

I want to send a non-echoing string (let's say "date") to a
shell-buffer running a telnet/ssh process.

I found that send-invisible doesn't work in this case.  The
delivered string is still echoed in the buffer.

Any idea how to make this work?

I'm running emacs 21.3.
