how to convert an excel to a plain text table

hi,

i'd like to insert the contents of an excel table into a plain text
table created by the table.el package of Takaaki "Tak" Ota.

simple cut and paste converts the tab and newline characters into
blanks and fills just one table cell with the whole paste buffer.

any ideas ?
