global-mode-string padding

When several modes put information in global-mode-string, there needs
to be space between each piece of information. Is there any
convention for how to do that? erc-track has one trailing space, but
display-time has no padding. Should a mode simply pad on both sides,
to make sure that its status information doesn't run into other data?
