Shouldn't they be read-only from nature? If you want to edit them, you can press e in that buffer. If that does not help, check the permissions of that patch file! Are you its owner? Are you allowed to create a backup copy of the file in its directory?
What about copying it to /tmp? This copy should be yours then and you should be allowed to do with it whatever idea you develop ...
