`message.el' is required by `gnus-art.el': (require 'message)

If you modify the `load-path' for Gnus in ~/.gnus[.el] it is too late.
You need to modify it in ~/.emacs.
If that doesn't help, please do a `toggle-debug-on-error' before `M-x
gnus RET' and show us the backtrace.
