maybe look for ANSI.SYS or VANSI.SYS file
and place a line such

DEVICE=\DOS\ANSI.SYS

in \CONFIG.SYS

in the unix shell set the environment variable TERM to "ansi"
or if you want colors AFSIR find something else in your /etc/termcas
(eg. "pcansi-25")

BTW: You shouldn't write in info-gnu-emacs, there is help-gnu-emacs insted,
     my reply goes there.
