Aquamacs Emacs seems to cheat. *You* have to remember that ^ is a dead-key, i.e. you have to press SPC afterwards. In an effort to remind you of finishing your input that dead-key *seems* to be inserted into the buffer where you started to type C-x ^, while the cursor is taken into mini-buffer.

Can you check what happens when you finish input?


BTW, there is a specialised list for Carbon and other Emacsen on Mac OS X:
