Using your text as example, first place the cursor on the spot marked
with "*" and press C-SPC, then move cursor to "!", then C-x r d

     2  GNU Emacs 21.4.1 (i386-redhat-linux-gnu, X toolkit, Xaw3d scroll bars)
     3  of 2006-03-07 on hs20-bc1-6.build.redhat.com

     5  when I place number lines in-front of lines in a region using the
     6  command
     7  M-h C-u M-| cat -n RET
     8  
     9  and later, after saving the file and rebooting and what-have-you want
    10  to remove the lines, the next command fails,    
    11  C-x r d
    12  
    13  !how can I get the job done?
