I use a "special" frame for this purpose (a small emacs frame in the
upper left corner), i use it to display *Completion* and some other
temporally buffers.

(info "(emacs)Special Buffer Frames")

This may require GNU Emacs 22.  If you are interested i can send my
configuration.
